Pai-Yen Chen named IEEE Fellow

Pai-Yen Chen

Professor Pai-Yen Chen was named an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, or IEEE, Fellow in 2024 for his contributions to mesoscopic and multiscale electromagnetics for antenna and sensor applications.

The Fellow distinction is reserved for IEEE members who have made significant contributions to their field Chen was one of 338 members elevated to fellow, out of over 1,000 nominees.

Chen, who joined UIC in 2018, conducts multidisciplinary research on applied electromagnetics, RF and microwave antennas and circuits, wireless sensors and systems, nanophotonics, nanoelectronics, and quantum information science and engineering, or QISE.

Chen was also appointed a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Sensors Council for 2024 through 2026.

Earlier last year, he received the IEEE Sensors Council Technical Achievement Award in Sensor Systems or Networks – Advanced Career. The technical achievement award is considered the highest technical honor offered by IEEE.

In 2024, Chen also received the International Young Visiting Scholar award in 2024, sponsored by the University Academic Alliance of Taiwan (UAAT). Through this program, advanced semiconductor chips will be built with the help of National Taiwan University.

Chen has grants totaling approximately $2 million. He is actively recruiting graduate students in electromagnetics and radio-frequency integrated circuits to explore emerging topics such as antenna-on-chip/antenna-in-package using IPD, TSV and HDI-PCB technologies, 3D IC heterogenous integration, device-circuit co-design, silicon photonics, hardware-based cryptography, flexible electronics, non-Hermitian wave systems, and quantum electrodynamics in his research group.
