Associate Professor Pai-Yen Chen was appointed a Distinguished Lecturer of the Institute of Electronic and Electrical Engineers (IEEE) Sensors Council for 2024 through 2026. According to the announcement, his selection was based on his reputation, experience, diversity, and the relevance of his proposed topics for the group.
In this role, Chen will seek out lecturing opportunities to promote the field of sensors to the engineering and scientific community, and to the public. These talks will take place at local IEEE chapters, universities, private companies, high schools, and science fairs.
IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional organization and has several communities and publications relating to various specialties within electrical and electronic engineering.
Chen conducts multidisciplinary research dedicated to applied electromagnetics, RF and microwave antennas and circuits, wireless sensors and integrated systems, nanophotonics, nanoelectronics, and quantum science and engineering.
Chen also received the 2023 IEEE Chicago Section Distinguished R&D Award, in recognition of his achievements in research on electromagnetics, RF antennas and circuits, sensor devices and systems, and internet of things.
Chen joined UIC in 2018, and has received several honors, including a 2018 National Science Foundation CAREER Award, a SPIE Rising Researcher Award in 2018, an Applied Computational Electromagnetics Society Early Career award in 2019, and was named an IOP Emerging Leader in Measurement Science and Technology (MST) in 2021; MST is the world’s oldest scientific instrumentation and measurement journal established in 1923 and the IOP’s first research journal.
Chen has four concurrent grants, totaling approximately $1.8 million. He is actively recruiting graduate students to work with a background in electromagnetics, radio-frequency integrated circuits, and quantum-related areas in his research group.
