ECE welcomes Owen Cruz to the Student Affairs office

Owen Cruz

Owen Cruz joined the ECE department as a program student advisor on April 8. He will focus on undergraduate-related matters.

Cruz joins UIC from Maryville University, a private university located in St. Louis, Missouri, where he served as a program coordinator in the school’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion. In that role, he worked directly with students from historically marginalized backgrounds who wanted to showcase their cultural identity on campus.

Cruz earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in romance languages, literature, and linguistics from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 2022.

While pursuing his undergraduate degree, Cruz worked as a classroom assistant at La Petite Ecole, a private dual-language French-English primary school. He enjoyed working with kindergarteners and preschoolers but wanted to move into higher education.

Cruz’s initial impression of UIC is that it is a resource-rich mini-city within Chicago, focused on putting students first. He hopes Chicago and UIC will help him further his career goals in higher education and looks forward to helping ECE’s undergraduate students navigate their college careers.

“UIC is a great fit for me; it’s very diverse and a great community,” Cruz said. “I was looking for a bigger city with more opportunity to pursue both my professional and personal goals.”

You can find Cruz in the ECE Student Affairs office.
