College recognizes grad student John Sabino for his teaching abilities

John Sabino received the 2024-2025 College of Engineering Exceptional Teaching Promise Award, an honor bestowed on the best graduate teaching assistants in recognition of their commitment to supporting the educational mission of the college’s programs. Associate Professor Igor Paprotny nominated Sabino for the award.
Sabino has dedicated a lot of time to his teaching assistant (TA) positions. He has been a TA for ECE 449 Microdevices and Micromachining Technology since 2022, and has helped maintain the design software license servers for the class since he began his graduate studies in 2016. Sabino is also the TA for ECE 454, Mechatronic Embedded Systems Design, a position he’s held since 2016.
This summer, he will teach a course focused on fabricating micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductors (CMOS) for a class offered under the Federal Chips and Science Act, with the goal of growing the pipeline of engineers at the undergraduate level. Sabino will also help upgrade UIC’s Nanotechnology Core Facility this summer.
Sabino is a doctoral student; he defended his dissertation, MEMS Hybrid Electronic Integration: From Micro-Robotic Actuation to Control and Monitoring of MEMS Sensors, in February, and is working to complete his thesis.
This fall, Sabino plans to join industry, partnering with start-ups commercializing devices he’s worked on during his time as a UIC student. He is considering teaching in the future.
He was honored at a ceremony on April 28 and received a small monetary award.
