Research Misconduct: The UI Policy and Case Studies to Aid In Understanding Misconduct

Presenter: Richard A. Gemeinhart, UIC

Abstract: The University of Illinois Policy on Integrity in Research and Publication and the University of Illinois Chicago Procedures for Adjudicating Allegations of Misconduct in Research and Publication will be discussed. The five steps of the adjudication process will be summarized: 1) assessment, 2) inquiry, 3) investigation, 4) adjudication, and 5) appeal. The impact on research will be discussed along with methods to protect the researcher if allegations are received. Finally, several examples of research misconduct will be discussed along with how the research misconduct was identified.

Speaker bio: Richard (Rick) A. Gemeinhart earned his BS in engineering from Purdue University from the interdisciplinary engineering department (now engineering Education) conducting research in the Laboratory of Renewable Resource Engineering. For his doctoral education, Gemeinhart moved to the industrial and physical pharmacy department of Purdue University to work with Kinam Park, focusing on the interface of materials science and drug delivery. Upon completion of his PhD, Gemeinhart joined W. Mark Saltzman in the chemical engineering school at Cornell University, focusing on ocular drug delivery, in vitro transfection, and tissue engineering. Gemeinhart is a professor of pharmaceutics and bioengineering at UIC, with his primary appointment in biopharmaceutical sciences and secondary appointments in bioengineering, chemical engineering, and ophthalmology and visual sciences. For his research accomplishments, Gemeinhart was named Society For Biomaterials Young Investigator, AACP New Investigator and Vahlteich Scholar at UIC. Gemeinhart has been funded by the NIH, DOD, NSF, and several foundations, and has been an active reviewer for the NIH, NSF, and other agencies. Gemeinhart is editor of Pharmaceutical Research and a member of the editorial board of two other journals. His laboratory focuses on understanding the stability and inflammatory impact of biomaterials used for drug delivery. Gemeinhart has been actively engaged in graduate education, having served as the director of the Biopharmaceutical Sciences Graduate Program (2005-2011, and 2017-current) and director of graduate education for the College of Pharmacy (2012-2014). Gemeinhart is also a research integrity officer (2014-current) and sssociate vice chancellor for research (2020-current) overseeing the Office of Research Integrity for the University of Illinois Chicago.
